HEALTHYGLASS will determine the optimum composition and processing conditions of aluminum-free coatings for the protection of drugs in their glass primary packaging. This will be achieved by a thorough investigation of the structure at the micro- and the atomic-scales, of Si-based oxide (SiO2), and oxynitride (SiOxNy) amorphous coatings. Our innovative objective is to optimize their barrier performance and chemical durability with regard to aggressive media reproducing the contained drug solutions by tuning the surfaces, the interfaces with the glass and the coating itself. Aiming at a direct industrial application, HEALTHYGLASS will define the most appropriate parametric windows for the processing of such coatings on glass by chemical vapor deposition, CVD; i.e. the only deposition technique which meets the predefined technological specifications and then will establish a comprehensive and robust scientific and engineering know-how in this field. Ultimately, the project aims at extending the current limited knowledge about glass coatings and at establishing clear and usable process structure-properties relationships with the scope to supply the pharmaceutics sector with innovative, sustainable glass containers. This latter point will be materialized by a demonstrator produced at the end of the project.
